About the Tunnel Robot:

Robots are useful for exploring environments either too small or too dangerous for humans. The tunnel robot was created to explore new methods of locomotion in a tunnel-like environment. Inspired by previous robots that mimicked snake-like motion and inchworm-like motion, the tunnel robot is a segmented robot that moves by expanding and contracting its body while bracing against the sides of the tunnel walls. Additionally, there is compliance built into the joints, allowing for more adaptive locomotion when encountering unknown tunnel geometry.
