The Field Effects project used an XY plotter to find the source of an underwater electric field. It was designed and constructed by Piotr Lizak, a senior mechanical engineering major, and James West, a sophomore computer science major. The project was suggested by Professors Kevin Lynch and Malcolm MacIver and done with the assistance of graduate student James Solberg.
The picture shows the XY plotter over the water tank. The plotter moved the probe around the tank under the control of a PC/104 stack running Simulink. The probe detected the strength of the electric field in order to map the field and find the location of the electrode, which could be moved to any location in the tank.
